Carbonate rock with a special crystalline texture acquired by recrystallization and heat and pressure during metamorphism. Marble is composed principally of the carbonate minerals calcite and dolomite, singly or in combination. Marble is relatively soft compared to granite and is not recommended to be used in some applications for counter tops. It is also easily etched by mild acids such as lemon juice or vinegar. Spills should be wiped up immediately and counters should be resealed on an annual basis.
Marble is softer and more porous than granite making it easier to stain or scratch and as such is not recommended for use in kitchens. Its natural and often bold veining makes it a beautiful stone for vanities, shower jambs and other interior uses. We recommend applying sealant once every year, and cleaning with water or a cleanser specifically manufactured for natural stone.
